Richard Black, PH.D
Chief Nutrition Officer

In addition to his role as Chief Nutrition Officer of Thrive365, Richard is a Principal at Quadrant D Consulting, and CSO of Care4ward, a Boston based cancer start-up. Richard began his career as an Assist. Professor in Nutrition Sciences at the University of Toronto. Over a 25-year career in the food industry, he has worked for The Kellogg Company, Nestlé, Novartis, ILSI NA, Kraft/Mondelēz and PepsiCo, where he was VP of Global Nutrition Sciences. Richard is an Adjunct Professor of the Practice at the Tufts University Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, and has authored or co-authored over 60 scientific articles, book chapters and abstracts. In 2014 the United States Department of Agriculture awarded Richard the John A Milner Lectureship, “In recognition of outstanding contributions to nutrition science,” and in 2012 the Institute of Food Technologists awarded him the Babcock-Hart Award, “To honor an IFT member who has attained distinction by contributions to food technology which result in improved public health through nutrition or more nutritious food.”

Richard has undergraduate degrees in Chemistry and in Psychology from McMaster University, Canada, and a PhD in Physiological Psychology studying taste response and appetite as drivers of weight gain. Richard served as the inaugural chair of The Obesity Society’s Food Industry Engagement Council, and currently is a member of the recently formed Tuft’s Nutrition Council for the University’s School of Nutrition. While at Kraft/Mondelez, Richard was the Chief Nutrition Officer and was the lead inventor of Thrive365 (acquired by Diabetes Life Coach in 2019). Thrive365 is the only patented, nutritional scoring platform proven to positively affect behavior change in Type 2 Diabetic patients.
